Manual task performance and manual handling are known to be major causes of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace. Every year in Australia thousands of workers are injured as a result of manual task performance. Unsafe manual handling is a common cause of work related injuries.  That’s why Aim Physiotherapy and Work Health Solutions offer manual task safety training to help reduce injuries from manual tasks by providing workers with knowledge and practical skills. Our training programs are designed to give participants the knowledge, skills and experience to avoid injury.

Our manual task safety training will provide participants with ‘foundation’ knowledge regarding the health and safety risks and impacts of unsafe manual task performance. All training is delivered by a registered allied health professional.  Training is structured to suit your industry, worksite and objectives and offers participants the opportunity to:

  • Understand WHS responsibilities
  • Understand how injury occurs and what can be done to prevent it.
  • Understand and apply fundamentals of manual handling, manual task safety, including the risk control hierarchy, through examples relevant to their work.
  • Understand how to implement effective risk controls based on ergonomic principles.
  • Understand personal responsibility requirements to be physically prepared for work demands
  • Understand risk taking behaviour and its impact.
  • Achieve behavioural change with a ‘How’ to think rather than ‘what’ to think approach.

We operate with an inherent belief that all employees should be able to work free from the risk of injury. To achieve this, we work tirelessly with businesses to eliminate risk. At the core of our belief system is that being proactive is the answer to injury prevention. We implement programs to lower risk profiles and educate employees about their obligation and contribution to this process. Our approach is a proactive injury prevention system and it starts with education.

Employers have both a legal and ethical obligation to ensure that employees are adequately educated and have the necessary skills to perform their job tasks in a safe working environment. Providing manual task safety training and manual handling training is the first step in the right direction. By law employers are required to provide sufficient information, instruction and training to their employees to enable them to work safely and without risking their health. The training provided should help employees understand the nature of hazardous manual handling, the risks associated, the reasons why risk controls have been set in place and how to best utilise the risks controls.

At Aim Physiotherapy and Work Health Solutions we have evolved to understand that training needs to be as tailored and dynamic as the workplace that it is delivered in. To be effective, training needs to be engaging and have relevance to the everyday lives of the employees and senior managers must encourage employees to take a proactive approach to injury prevention and education. With such an approach, employers can significantly decrease the costs associated with musculoskeletal injuries in their workforce. All training participants are given simple take home messages that will ensure they develop the skills to stay strong, safe and healthy at work and at home. Training is most likely to change worker behaviour when customised to the job demands of the workers. We take into account the specific risks posed to your workforce in relation to the type of work undertaken and the surrounding environment, tailoring our training approach to these specific requirements.

Businesses must take a proactive approach to risk management, including education, in order to prevent workplace injuries. Manual handling training should be viewed as a continuous program with introduction of risk mitigation behaviours and processes that become embedded in a company’s culture.
